July 30, 2006 SoCalCup Long Beach Report From US500 The wind gods showed up for this one: 14-20kts all afternoon and the sun was out. Couldn't ask for anything better. In fact the wind was so good and was sailable around 2 PM we decided to run the "First Annual, Invitational, Peter Benello Memorial, Tour de Long Beach" long distance race. Four miles as the crow flies to the weather mark and then about 7 miles of running and reaching to the finish...BIG FUN!! We were joined by Brian Marshall, of Nor Cal and part time So Cal sailor, for his first racing experience and it seems like he might be hooked on racing. He's got great potential and we look forward to him joining us in the future. Watch out Nor Cal if he decides to take this racing more seriously. We were a small group this time but really enjoyed the sailing and the LD race so we will have to make it a regular event when the wind is right. Peter B was on the injured list, he was trying to qualify for the Bob Cat Olympics by doing a full 360 forward off a 8' dirt wall and sprained his foot...nice move Peter; you are supposed to do the tricks without getting injured. Some of the SD guys were out of town or on the sick list. Joe R
