CalCup RC Report for 09/16/2006
It was the last race of the 2006 CalCup Series and what a great time Mike, Marley and I had. That you to you all for making CalCup what it is. We both enjoy what we do so much and we are looking forward to 2007 and have already started working on the CalCup Series for 2007.
As usual on the Friday before the race we have to find a spot in the Bay Area where we felt that we will have wind to hold the next day’s races. Not only did we have the unusual weather to contend with but also StFYC was holding their annual Big Boat Race Series so we had to find a place to race in the Bay that would not affect their races. With this in mind and the wind conditions we picked Coyote Point for that last CalCup of the season.
Marley and I were going to do RC on our own when Gina Egelston, Russell and Andrews’s mother, said she would come aboard the RC boat to help us.
Saturday morning arrived. We had completed all our Friday preparations so just had to do the last minuet early Saturday morning tasks before arriving to the CalCup boat by 8am and preparing her for the road trip to Coyote Point and loading the Suburban with extra equipment for our young racers to use.
Arriving at Coyote point and with our breakfast meeting out of the way we left the boat at the launch site and drove to the rigging site where Mike and Mike Zajicek would be holding their Board and Fin Clinic at 10.30am. It was great to see you all there we hope that you found it informative.
We had three juniors attend the clinic this time, Andrew, Russell and Astrid. We hope that the three of you managed to take away with you some ideas to help you with your sailing careers. Daniel a new CalCup racer also joined the group.
At 12.30 PM saw Mike, Marley, Gina and I racing to the boat to launch her and go and set the course. Once this was completed we dropped Mike back at the boat launch site where he drove back to the rigging site to rig his own gear and sails for Astrid to use and also help Russell and Andrew rig their gear.
Whilst we were setting the course Ben Bamer and Mike Zajicek kindly held the skippers meeting for us.
Eventually the wind gods were kind to us and we managed to get the racers started just after 3PM. This time we had a total of twelve starts:
Race 1
A & B Fleets at 3.13PM, C Fleet and Women’s Fleet at 3.20PM.
Race 2
A & B Fleets at 3.36PM, C Fleet and Women’s Fleet at 3.48PM.
Race 3
A & B Fleets at 4.05PM, C Fleet and Women’s Fleet at 4.12PM.
Race 4
A & B Fleets at 4.36PM, C Fleet and Women’s Fleet at 4.43PM.
Race 5
A & B Fleets at 4.58PM, C Fleet and Women’s Fleet at 5.04PM.
Race 6 (Practice Race)
A & B Fleets at 5.19PM, C Fleet and Women’s Fleet at 5.26PM.
RC was certainly kept on its toes during the day. Bryan joined the RC boat with his gear at the end of race 3, although I feel sure he would rather have been racing the other races with you all!
At the end of the races, as Bryan was aboard by default, we pulled the course so that Mike did not have to do this with me as we had planned, after he had de-rigged his own windsurfing gear etc.
We met Mike at the boat launch site, Marley had a quick walk, we hooked the boat to the Suburban, took Gina back to her boy’s at the rigging site and Bryan and his gear back to his vehicle.
Thank you to Gina for all her help with RC and Bryan who had not been expecting to help J
Mike, Marley and I took the boat back to base-camp, whilst driving back we giggled over some of the day’s events. Running CalCup although at times can be a challenge, with both enjoy so much giving to the sport of Windsurfing. The boat was washed and put away until the next time she will be on the water.
We look forward to seeing you all at the end of Season CalCup Party and Awards Ceremony on October the 14th and also for the 2007 CalCup Race Season.
