Report from USA4:

yea you missed a windy one! Percy came in from setting the marks just as we were having the skippers meeting and said-yea its a bit winddy out there- 18-24. By the time we got out , the flood was ripping next to the jetty at TI and it was a steady 25. Most of us were on 10.0's lit up. We got one race under our belt and everybody headed in the rig down. 2 hours later on the beach, the wind had just come down a bit but it was close to 4 already and alot of people lost their motivation and left as their either de-rigged or were out on their small gear. I decided 1 race was enough for me and watched the 2nd race from the jetty with the rest of the peanut gallery. Percy took a huge lead extending to what we thought was at leadt a 1/4 mile in front of MZ. He rounds the leeward mark and was having abit of trouble as his mast went forward in the track and he was struggleing to hold it down. Meanwhile, MZ on his 9.8 comes trucking through, bangs the left corner upwind and crossed Percy just in fornt of the line as Percy explodes before the finish. Classic! Eric pulled a similar move as it looked like CRad might get him at the finsh and expoded just a few feet before the line. Who says you windsurfing isnt a spectators sport! -Steve

Report by Mike Percey:

REPORT THROUGH THE EYES OF THE FIRST LOSER :-)

RACE 1
The conditions were winds of 19-24 mph and the water had extreme chop. The course………… well who the “S*!*” had set the start line? The line is extremely boat end favored. With this insight I naturally jump the gun and end up starting at the pin end, which gives me a great view of the whole fleet and the first tack to port fro the weather mark. Luckily my port is going well, and I struggle back to 5th at this mark, behind ML, Chris Radkowski, Ben and Eric. My DDW is going well, and I round the bottom mark in 2nd just behind ML. ML hits the lay line perfectly for the finish, giving me no chance to better my 2nd place. The first four over the line were ML, VYV, USA12, 22.

RACE 2
We go out for race 2 and decide to go into postponement, as conditions are too extreme for racing. The wind is now 27-34 mph and the water now has huge standing up chop! Finally at 3.30pm the wind has dropped slightly to 27-32 mph but at least the flood has calmed the chop slightly! Most sailors have rigged down. I myself to a 9.2 sail and a 62cm fin. I hit the start in a perfect position at full speed and enjoy a large lead to the weather mark. I over stand the bottom mark a little. ML and CRad make up some ground. As I round the bottom mark my mast track slips all the way forward and my boom feels like it is knee high. The beat to the finish line is a monstrous struggle, putting me in the water twice; I loose concentration and miss the lay line to the finish. ML takes the win!

RACE 3
CRad gets a great start. I am a little early, taking a pretty big penalty, having to run the favored line down to mid line. 1st tack I am about mid fleet and round the weather in 3rd or 4th. CRad misses the lay line for the downwind mark, I go a little further, and also blow it! Good news ML close behind follows my lead, ‘my sort loves company”! I just pass CRad at the bottom mark with a very tight jibe, leaving CRad room to regain the lead on a better rounding to the weather, holding the lead to win Race 3. Myself beating ML by a foot!
I had speed to win but my mental and equipment preparation needs improvement.
NEXT TIME!
