Junior race 10-2
The weather report for 10-2 was not great for sailing. Light and variable winds were expected due to a storm front moving in from the Pacific. But lucky for the juniors, the storm front broke up, and the sun came out, and the wind actually filled in enough to start the racing.
In the first race, A fleeter Jack Lundquist quickly got out front chased by Culley Deisinger and then Brittany Lewis.. He got around the windward mark first and held onto a solid lead while Brittany tried to reel in Culley without any luck.
In B fleet Blaize Larzul quickly established himself as the one to beat with his first bullet. But he was chased in every race by a pack of B fleeters who were fighting hard to beat him, and each other. Evan Losito, George Goodhead, William Lundquist, and Megan Zhu rounded the first mark within 10 feet of each other, and right on Blaize’s tail. It was anyone’s race. In the end Megan prevailed with George, William, Evan and Calvin right behind her.
In the second race Jack again took the bullet, but Brittany started to make the magic of her new Maui sails 7.4 cambered race sail work, and she climbed over Culley to take second place.
In B fleet Blaize again put the pedal down hard to win. Evan had a great start and solid tactics to hold on for second, followed by Megan, George and William.
In the third race Brittany really got into her game crossing ahead of Jack at the first tack. No small challenge considering Jack is a two time national champion. She did succumb on the downwind leg, but definitely gave Jack a run for the money.
In B fleet Blaize was over early and had to come back around and restart. He had to work it pretty hard, but with the two laps B fleet was doing he was able to pull off the win. George Goodhead really stepped up his game in this race, taking a second, again followed by Megan Evan and William.
By the fourth race the wind had filled in nicely blowing over 15 knots on the outside of the course, and the action was stepped up with faster board speed, and continued jostling for position. Lots of really tight racing, lots of fun, and some real race experience for the youth.
Special congratulations go out to Calvin Achorn, Megan and Nick for finishing their first race ever! They were solid in every race, completing the entire course. Nice going!Information is provisional and subject to modification
