logo          Berkeley Youth Regatta 9/11/11

September 11, 2011 started out as a pretty typical day at Berkeley Marina.  The marine layer was solidly pushed up against the East Bay hills and the wind was blowing from the west in the low teens.  But things soon got more interesting as youth from around the bay area showed up and claimed their place on pebble carpet to start putting their windsurfing gear together as they all got ready for the second Berkeley Youth Windsurfing regatta.
By the time the racing started at 1 PM the fog had pulled back and the sun pushed through.  The gusts were in the high teens occasionally reaching the low 20s. Four races were run for both fleets with close racing and a lot of fun had by all.

A fleet was run out to His Lordships restaurant and back down to the Berkeley shore before finishing back at the dock in the south sailing  basin.  The A fleeters must have been busy with schoolwork because this fleet consisted of Jack Lundquist and Culley Deisinger.  Jack claimed the regatta with bullets but not without a serious chase from Culley.  Jack was riding a 250 liter wide style board without footstraps and when he got wound up surfing the swell down from His Lordships planing on starboard tack,  he ended up in the water on more than one occasion, and Culley almost drove right past him.  Nice work Culley.  Jack is a two time national champion so staying with him is a notable accomplishment.

B fleet had some serious competition going with Evan Losito, William Lundquist, Bleiz Larzul, George Losito and Kaan Mirel vying for the title.   They raced from the starting line at the Berkeley pier, reaching out to a buoy set just outside the sailing basin in the swell and back after a starboard rounding.   George Goodhead, a first year windsurfer, won the first race with Bleiz, William and Evan pressing him hard. Nice work George!

The next three races were handily won by Bleiz as he successfully utilized his years of experience to pull off straight bullets on the last three races.   Good going Blaiz, you set the bar for B fleet!

George was able to claim second place for the regatta, finishing right behind Bleiz in all the races except the last, when William, sailing a tactically perfect race,  caught him at the finish to claim a second place in that race.    Good sailing William!

Evan sailed two solid races, but then his 3 hours of practice the day before caught up to him and he succumbed to the 20 knot gusts and swell.  Nice work Evan, what happened to you on Saturday has happened to pretty much every racer I know.

Al Mirel was at the race coaching his 8 year old son Kaan who was racing in his first regatta ever.  This kid pulled off an amazing regatta, despite being 4 years younger than the next youngest competitor, only half their size, and sailing on a 1.6 m2 sail.  He finished all four races and pulled off a fourth place finish for the regatta.  Nice work Kaan!

In addition to Al’s expertise out on the water, the boys were treated to windsurfing dignitary Dave Kashy’s tuning mastery.  Dave was out on the dock helping the kids rig and tune their sails.  Thanks Dave!

Next race is planned for the tougher conditions at Crissy field.  These kids are tough.  They will have a great time mastering the chop and current at Crissy.
