We had our first ever Berkeley Youth Windsurf Regatta yesterday at the south
sailing basin in Berkeley Marina. The fleet was divided into A and B
fleets.

Both fleets started at the easternmost dock in the sailing basin. A fleet
ran a course which had a port rounding of a windward mark at his Lordships
restaurant followed by a port round of a leeward mark near the shore to the
east and then back across the start line to finish. B fleet did a starboard
rounding of a reaching mark about 300 yards south of the start, and then
return to finish. This A and B fleet setup was ideal as it catered to both
the top ranking junior windsurfer like my son Jack Lundquist (2011 US Youth
Windsurf Champion), and the beginning fleet as well. The only requirement
for equipment was that all boards had to have a centerboard.

Some kids brought their Technos, and others grabbed whatever they could find
at Cal Adventures and Cal Sailing Club.

At about 12:30 the wind filled in, the sun came out, and the racing was on.

In the A fleet Jack Lundquist quickly established his dominance and he went
on to score all bullets. Second place was hard fought between Charlie
Lundquist and Culley Deisinger, with the lead exchanging many times. Of
particular note was the performance by Brittany Lewis who ended up the day
in fourth place I A fleet, but was definitely gaining on the top three with
each heat. In the final heat she rounded the windward mark in second, only
to succumb to the Berkeley swell and chop on the way down to the leeward
mark.

In B fleet it was a hard fought battle between George Goodhead, William
Lundquist, and Evan Losito. The finishes were typically almost too close to
call, and William prevailed in the end only due to a finish line skirmish
when George asserted what he thought was his right to push through (and
into) William to finish first. Nice determination George! Fortunately we
had the excellent counsel of Bryan Macdonald as judge and when William
protested Bryan ruled in William's favor, ultimately giving the regatta to
William.

We got off four races and a lot of fun was had by all with surprisingly
close racing in both fleets. I am hoping to make this a monthly
occurrence, possibly exchanging venues back and forth with Dennis Deisinger
over at Saint Francis Yacht Club. I know there are a lot of you out there
who have kids now. Bring them out and share this really cool sport with
them. The kids love to race.
