Report:
What a great day, it turned out to be, for the first CalCup race of the 2010 season.

Finding a launch site for the race, certainly gave Mike and I plenty of challenges during the week, (with a low tide at ‘Pebble Carpet’, Berkeley certainly would not have been our first choice,) checking out possible launch site options, watching the weather and trying to guess what would happen on Saturday. After much deliberation, and with great trepidation, we ended up announcing ‘Pebble Carpet’, as the race venue, on Friday afternoon.

After all the normal Saturday morning race preparations, and the CalCup RC boat tied to the guest dock at BYC, we arrived at ‘Pebble Carpet’.

It is always the great joy of any race organizer, to see a new racer on the rigging area, but…wow…. we had 7 new racers!

Four racers had also travelled to be with us:
Jay Watermeyer, whom at the Nationals last year at Hood River promised me he would race CalCup this year, drove down with Alex Neilson, from OR & WA, arrived at 5am, and slept in their car at the rigging area, (Saba’s family will host them on their next trip down to race with us,) and Peter Bonello and Xavier Ferlet drove up from Southern California.

Later with RC out on the coarse, and only 2 racers on the water, and knowing we were working against the low tide, I made a cell call to Mr Z, “you chaps coming out to race, before you get stuck in the mud, we can see the wind arriving, and we will have enough wind to race”.

We managed to get two races off, but had to ‘call’ the third due to lack of wind.

RC totally enjoyed the day, and we hope all the racers did as well. and

I give huge thanks to Rachel Herrmann, and Mike Percey, (recovering from surgery so could not race,) as without their help, I could not have run RC.

Every racer did so well, their efforts were a joy to watch, but to me the racer of the day, goes to…….Saba Fazeli, our 15 year old junior, who had never raced a race before, and on race one, he was first over the finish line for his fleet. It was awesome to watch, especially knowing, he had never been on a windsurfing race course before.

Thank you to everyone, for making CalCup, what it is.
See you all on May 15th.
Regards,

Jane.
